From 1967-1977, the US government licensed private operators to dispose of low-level radioactive wastes from military ships and facilities, as well as other sources. 533,000 pounds of material consisting of uranium and thorium, and 950 pounds of plutonium and enriched uranium were buried in the site's "Restricted Area". Soil covering the ditches ultimately collapsed causing water to collect and contaminants to leech into the surrounding environment. Contamination was kept within the 40 acres of the restricted area and buffer zone of the total 900 acre site. Cleanup continues. Site consists of numerous properties in two distinct areas. Uranium ores for nuclear weapons production were processed at the St. Louis downtown site (Futura) from 1942 to 1957, first under contracts to the Manhattan Engineering District for the production of the first atomic bomb, and later to the Atomic Energy Commission. During the transfer of radioactive residues from the downtown site to the St. Louis Airport and Hazelwood for storage, several private and municipally owned properties were contaminated. Shallow groundwater has been contaminated by uranium, as have surface and subsurface soils that were also contaminated by thorium and radium. It's estimated that by completion of clean-up in 2012, roughly 800,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil will have been excavated and disposed of.

An ore-processing mill established in 1944 to produce uranium for the first atomic bomb. The mill's radioactive "tailings" caused contamination of 424 private and commercial properties. According to Utah's Desert Morning News, "Utah is left with a toxic legacy that has killed and sickened untold thousands…contaminated water supplies for generations to come, and infected an otherwise stunning red-rock landscape with millions of tons of radioactive mill tailings that will cost American taxpayers billions of dollars to remove." Former principal of Monticello High School lost his 16 year old son to leukemia caused by radiation. "Within a radius of five or six blocks of [their] home, six other young people died of leukemia, the oldest…in her 20's, the youngest a child of 4." Uranium production ceased in 1960 and the plant closed. Radioactive dust blew into the vicinity properties. Ground and surface water were contaminated by uranium, its radioactive decay products and heavy metals. Contaminated materials from the site were also used as construction material, which lead to the radioactive contamination of some properties in Monticello. The EPA has completed its cleanup operations.

Misplaced 337 tons of uranium hexafluoride. Fernald workers melted raw ore in acid baths to extract the uranium inside, often with nothing more than a pair of gloves and overalls for protection. More than 1,100 retired Fernald workers have filed claims for work-related illnesses such as cancer and and heart problems. From 1952 until closure in 1989, the uranium produced at Fernald fueled the country's nuclear weapons program. It is currently in clean-up.
